Title: W.A.P. in STEM: The Culture of Whiteness and Its Effect on Postsecondary STEM Education

Abstract: Scholars and practitioners seeking to enhance and improve underrepresented students’ persistence and engagement in postsecondary STEM education often fail to adequately achieve their goals due to their lack of focus on structural barriers manifesting as a result of systemic oppression embedded with the culture of STEM. Using Whiteness as Property (W.A.P.), this presentation will unpack the culture of whiteness that consumes STEM and how said culture perpetuates hostile, toxic climates for student success.
