Subject: Third Summer Research Mentor Cohort Meeting set for Friday July 1 at 1:30 pm in Merwin 205 - Fostering Independence

Hi Everyone,

I am looking forward to our meeting tomorrow!

Good news! the Entering Mentoring books are in, and I will have your copy at the meeting tomorrow. We also ordered some subs from Publix for lunch.

The students will not be there tomorrow, because they have an assignment to study videos on public (scientific/technical) speaking instead of the usual meeting this week.

  1. For tomorrow's session we are skipping ahead to Chapter 7 - Fostering Independence. To start tomorrow's session, I would like to define what independence means to you, and what should our mentees know and be able to do by the time they leave their research experience with us?

  1. Your students should be currently drafting a research philosophy and watching some videos on technical speaking and its importance. According to the workbook, I am supposed to tell you to read The Mentoring Research Writers on page 98 after tomorrow's session. It is a fascinating read, and you might want to ask your mentees to read it too!
  2.
  3. Our last session will be July 15, and we will have a guest facilitator, Dr. Pamela Harris, to discuss Culturally Responsive Mentoring.

  1. https://www.pamelaeharris.com/<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.pamelaeharris.com%2F&data=05%7C01%7Ckptucker%40fgcu.edu%7Cfe165893d3354638558d08da65aa2e7a%7Cf7a5a4ef4ffa4c80bfb3c12e28872099%7C0%7C0%7C637934079237442237%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=6Zw3Yl7x1voBxT9S1WyX6nMZxZGWE97k3YqABD1OukI%3D&reserved=0>

  1. Our students will have an informal poster session on July 22 that you all are encouraged to attend.
  2. We will have one more fun group activity of our student mentees' choosing on either July 26 or July 27. More information will be forthcoming on those last two activities.

Subject: Re: Second Summer Research Mentor Cohort Meeting set for Friday June 17 at 1:30 pm in Merwin 205

Hi Everyone,

Thank you all for attending this afternoon's session. I personally am learning a lot from you all, and I am picking up lots of best practices I need to adopt in future mentor/mentee relationships!

  1. Importance of Mentor/Mentee Contracts:
I thought you all might be interested in this blog post by Dr. Pamela Harris. Dr. Harris will be leading our session on Culturally Responsive Mentorship on July 15th, and this post suggests that creating a mentor/mentee contract together is a good first step to cultivating a culturally responsive mentor/mentee relationship https://blogs.ams.org/mathmentoringnetwork/2020/08/14/a-need-for-mentor-mentee-contracts/<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fblogs.ams.org%2Fmathmentoringnetwork%2F2020%2F08%2F14%2Fa-need-for-mentor-mentee-contracts%2F&data=05%7C01%7Ckptucker%40fgcu.edu%7Cfe165893d3354638558d08da65aa2e7a%7Cf7a5a4ef4ffa4c80bfb3c12e28872099%7C0%7C0%7C637934079237442237%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=wGpplfFTN4T7be1vHrWtuaOko8Xfckon4TGJdZLx2go%3D&reserved=0>. I was surprised to see that the mentor/mentee contract that is highlighted in this blog post has language acknowledging that there may be reasons to end the relationship. "In the event that either party finds the mentoring relationship unproductive and requests that it be terminated, we agree to honor that individual's decision without question or blame." I had not seen that language in other contracts before, but I could see how it could be healthy and beneficial to include that acknowledgment at the start of the relationship.

  1. Student Activities:
These are the activities we have been or will be working on with your students in our professional development meetings/lunches throughout the first part of summer:

     * Aligning expectations and goal setting (I think students were surprised to hear that many of you expected their growth to be the most important product of the collaboration!) 6/3/2022
     * Documenting your professional development: Developing CVs, LinkedIn, and Websites. 6/10/2022
     * Peer review of CVs and practice elevator pitches 6/17/2022
     *   Developing your research philosophy
     * Technically Speaking (tips on prepping for public speaking and presentation design)
     * Peer review of research philosophies

  1. Homework: Develop or adopt an Individual Development Plan to suit your needs. There is an example starting on page 50 of Chapter 3, and I found some more examples here https://ogefacultymentoring.web.unc.edu/wp-content/uploads/sites/11490/2016/04/IDP-Examples-all.pdf<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fogefacultymentoring.web.unc.edu%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2Fsites%2F11490%2F2016%2F04%2FIDP-Examples-all.pdf&data=05%7C01%7Ckptucker%40fgcu.edu%7Cfe165893d3354638558d08da65aa2e7a%7Cf7a5a4ef4ffa4c80bfb3c12e28872099%7C0%7C0%7C637934079237442237%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=GK9N0QTS8Jc80dp8X0guaGKpZ9ffcgJLAX8FN%2FVGS%2Bk%3D&reserved=0>

Subject: Second Summer Research Mentor Cohort Meeting set for Friday June 17 at 1:30 pm in Merwin 205

Hi Everyone,

I sent a calendar invite a while ago, but I wanted to share some reading materials before our meeting this Friday.

  1. We moved our mentor meetings to Friday at 1:30 because about many of our research students meet for lunch at 12:30 in Merwin 205. You are by no means obligated to, but if you can come 15 minutes early, you can enjoy some free lunch and chat with our students.
They should be practicing their elevator pitches at the end of Friday's session.

  1. The plan is to discuss the attached file Chapter 3 -- Promoting Professional Development from the Entering Mentoring workbook during our meeting this week, and the additional question I wanted to ask you all to think about is, "What are the best professional development activities we should be encouraging our students to get involved with at this stage of their academic career?"

  1. During our meeting Aligning Expectations meeting with the students two weeks ago, I was surprised that almost all of them said that they would love a document like the attached Expectations document from their mentors.

  1. If you can't make it in person on Friday, you are welcome to zoom.

Join Zoom Meeting

I hope to see all of you on Friday.

Subject: Recap of First Summer Research Mentor Cohort Meeting set for Thursday June 2 at noon in Whitaker 227

Hi Everyone,

Thank you all for a great session today!

Here is a quick recap from today.

  1. We decided at the end of today's meeting to move the rest of our sessions to Friday afternoons from 1:30-2:30 because the student research mentees who want to meet on campus have lunch every Friday from 12:30-1:30 in Merwin 205. Holding our biweekly mentor meetings at 1:30 allows us to have a little socialization time with students and eat free lunch with them. I will send a calendar invite in a minute with the updated time. Our next meeting will be Friday June 17 at 1:30 in Merwin 205.
  2.
  3. The handouts and mentor-mentee compact tools are available here https://www.dropbox.com/sh/pk62my25zd7z728/AABrWytuZ7OhtpW9iztjcpENa?dl=0<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.dropbox.com%2Fsh%2Fpk62my25zd7z728%2FAABrWytuZ7OhtpW9iztjcpENa%3Fdl%3D0&data=05%7C01%7Ckptucker%40fgcu.edu%7Cfe165893d3354638558d08da65aa2e7a%7Cf7a5a4ef4ffa4c80bfb3c12e28872099%7C0%7C0%7C637934079237442237%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=98kI%2BBGBU0DB%2FzsfPZEpBZ3a6n9d3%2BRLRuCbXdhOzgE%3D&reserved=0>

  1. Please fill out this anonymous survey to help us see what mentors are currently covering with mentees and to help us plan the summer's activities for mentors and mentees. https://forms.gle/NBYAu48b2RmLBALe9<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fforms.gle%2FNBYAu48b2RmLBALe9&data=05%7C01%7Ckptucker%40fgcu.edu%7Cfe165893d3354638558d08da65aa2e7a%7Cf7a5a4ef4ffa4c80bfb3c12e28872099%7C0%7C0%7C637934079237442237%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=AHeFNeGgYmBkk45lHCZQKRCBi%2FqBY%2B1AWUhTVgsbBZw%3D&reserved=0>
  2. Your homework for this week is to interview your mentee and write a paragraph about them, and to develop/adapt a mentor-mentee contract and fill it out with your mentee.
  3. While this is homework, I hope it saves you time because you will inevitably have to write a letter of recommendation for your mentee anyways, so this activity can help motivate them, and save you time in the long run.

Hi Everyone,

This is a friendly reminder that our first meeting is today in Whitaker 227. We have mini-bagels (everything and raisin cinnamon), cream cheese, and clementine oranges for snacks.

We would appreciate if you would take this short anonymous google forms survey sometime today. Your feedback will help inform our plans for future activities for your students and for all of you as well.
